⏵ character information
name: Fio
canon: NieR Reincarnation
age: 7*
Fio's age has been inferred based on her behavior, reading level (picture books), and average height (122cm/approximately 4 feet tall, somewhat shorter than another child from the NieR series and taller than the youngest character in Drakengard.) She does not have a specified age in canon.

canon point: The end of NieR Reincarnation. The People and the World Act III: "Goodbye" After requesting a favor from Mama and before waking up in the final cutscene.

Fio is or was the recorded memory of a human child, whose history was preserved in a storage facility on the moon, along with the rest of humanity's memories. At the story's conclusion, she asks to be granted a favor, which results in her being reborn on Earth. Whether she has been reborn as a full fledged human has yet to be specified in the text, though it does appear to be the conclusion that a large majority of fans made. Since it has yet to be confirmed, I've chosen a canon point just before she awakens on Earth in the event the writers decide to expand further.

In Etraya, she will have a physical human form and will have the same capability of manifesting her weapon (see the Abilities section.) Originally, I wanted to play with her as being a piece of data in a question that I asked on the FAQ a long while back, but I felt it would be too difficult (and very unfun) for me to work with in the end. She also has a castmate currently in the game who has chosen to have their character be a physical human, so I would like to match up with them to make interactions easier.

history: Fandom Wiki Entry for Fio | Story Synopsis for Main Story
abilities:

Weapon: Fate & Destiny - In the Cage, human memories are recorded in the form of weapons and stored away in the database. Unlike the other playable Memory characters who wielded a weapon or had combat skills recorded from a human's data, Fio did not have any training in the real world. However, as a resident of the Cage, she's able to manifest a weapon into existence which she can use in combat. In Fio's case, her weapon is the form of a pair of massive silver prisoner balls and chains called Fate & Destiny. They're unusually much bigger than her and also have a passive skill that allows the user to be just a little more sturdy.

Her weapons are not initially visible. When needed, she can manifest them into existence and dismiss them. When visible, her weapons levitate around her and can be launched at enemies with a simple wave of her hand. The weapon's movements are guided by her gestures, but also seem to activate based on her emotions. For example, the ball and chain will pummel foes repeatedly whenever she cowers. After her weapons launch in the air, they conveniently warp back to her side.

By default, Fio has affinity towards the Light element. She can wield other elements depending on the weapon and costumes that she wears. Additional weapons and costumes will be treated as regains.

personality:
(Content Warning: Fio's source material comes with a massive amount of heavy themes. For her story in particular, the most notable ones involve child death, neglect, abandonment, abuse, murder, classism, starvation. Not all of it is specifically mentioned in this section, but may be in further reading material should you go looking more into her canon.)

Kindness in the face of malice is what describes Fio the best. Her biological family was corrupt and ordered for her death since they desired a male heir. Though she was saved and adopted, she later on became unloved by her adoptive parents, who viewed her positive qualities as "too good" for them. And the country she grew up in was governed by unfair laws which subject her to further abuse. Yet although she was hated by the world, she always retained her kindness.

Loving and compassionate, she displays care for those around her, whether it be family, friends, and strangers. She extended a helping hand to another child, offering to help find his mother. She showed concern for the female administrator, simply known as "Her", questioning if she was afraid of making new friends. Despite being rebuffed by the other girl many times, Fio kept trying to help and goes as far as requesting to stay on Earth, even if she may be the only human left. Especially after her own experience with loneliness, she's eager to reach out and ease the pain of those who may have suffered in similar ways she had.

With her determination and hope, she's shockingly resilient in a harsh world. When her life went downhill, she did everything in her power to restore the happy family that she once had. She studied to achieve the highest marks in her class and made handmade gifts in an attempt to win back the love of her parents. Even with the knowledge that her father no longer cared for her, she worried and tried to protect him from harm. While she's often faced with many difficult obstacles and sometimes her efforts go unrewarded, she's not one to give up easily.

Her kind heart is as much a strength as it is a weakness. It is also one of the reasons that she met a tragic end in reality. This makes her susceptible to betrayal and neglecting her own needs. When her adoptive mother left, Fio continued to wait despite the clear signs that she had no intention of returning. It's only until she's driven away from her home, sad and starving to death, that she accepts the harsh truth she had been abandoned by someone dear. She tends to focus on the happiness and wellbeing of the people around her before putting herself first, often claiming that she's happy if others are.

Despite her mental fortitude while going through many struggles, she's clearly still a little girl. She loves picture books and the company of other people. Her curiosity about others and eagerness to make friends tends to lead her to ask a plethora of questions, even about the most mundane of things like favorite food. She parrots unfamiliar words from grownups, often getting tongue tied when pronouncing complicated terms. She's not afraid to admit when she's scared. She fears dying, loneliness, and may break down into tears when pushed to her very limit.

Suitability -

Fio is shown to be able to navigate her way around without supervision and she's often been left to wander her own town by herself. She has more awareness of what goes on more than she lets on, like knowing about the unfair laws placed upon her country and what she's allowed or not allowed to do. Depending on the situation, she might make attempts to break the rules, if it means protecting someone dear.

While Fio may be very young, she's one of the handful of characters in canon that's entrusted with stopping a virus from destroying the Cage, the database that preserves humanity's memories as well as her own existence. Simply by being herself, she was able to befriend the perpetrator and may as well be the reason why the database was saved. She's aware of the existence of other "versions" and branches as well, knowing that they result from making a different decision in life. And although she knows life can be full of sadness and pain that may never heal, she understands the importance of accepting the past and finding the strength to move forward. Fio has faced and persevered through too much hardship, far more than any child her age should endure.

Similar to Etraya's premise, it looks like she'll have to protect her world again! The task of proving her worth and protecting as much as she can of the multiverse is an objective that she would willingly try to accomplish.

As long as she has her weapon, she's capable of putting up a fight. However, she's a nonviolent character and will largely prefer methods that avoid causing harm to others. Fighting is a last resort and as much as she hates it, she knows that sometimes it's necessary. While she has the ability to fight, I'm hoping that I'll be able to have Fio shine through with her personality, since her kindness has always been stressed to be her most important quality.
